Welcome to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family
Services Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) informational Web pages. The department will use these pages to communicate HIPAA-specific information to our providers in a concise and consistent manner.
The department has compiled much of the HIPAA specific information within the following links:
- Chapter 300 - Companion Guide
The information contained in Chapter 300 is a supplement to the X12 (4010A1) or NCPDP (5.1 or 1.1 batch) HIPAA Implementation Guides. This chapter contains the companion guides for all providers who will be submitting X12 or NCPDP electronic transactions to the department.
- Implementation News
In order to ensure a smooth transition to HIPAA, the department created a contingency plan that allows for the temporary continued use of existing (pre-HIPAA) electronic formats. In order to not disrupt your operations and services, it is important that you transition to the HIPAA-formats, prior to the termination of our contingency plan.
- Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
The department has created several FQAs in order to provide you information in a timely and consistent manner. We encourage you to review this information, prior to phoning the department, as many times, the answer(s) to your Question(s) can be found here.
- Transaction Implementation
The information found here will provide you transaction by transaction implementation information with each of our major electronic trading partners.
- Other HIPAA Information
This link will direct you to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site, where additional information on HIPAA can be found.
